Papa Westray, Orkney Islands

View towards the Papay Holm from Papa Westray, Orkney

Papa Westray is a small isle in Orkney, a group of islands off the north coast of Scotland. Known to Orcadians as Papay (pronounced papee), it is one of the most northerly of the Orkney islands with about 70 permanent residents. Papa Westray has several claims to fame, including:

  • a number of archaeological sites such as:-
    • the Knap of Howar - older than the Pyramids
    • chambered cairns on the Papay Holm
    • St Boniface church on the 'Munkerhoose' site - a Pictish settlement eroding into the sea
    • the remains of a religious site dedicated to St Tredwell (Triduana) on the edge of an inland loch
  • birdlife - especially on the North Hill RSPB reserve; and
  • the world's shortest scheduled flight (under two minutes) between Papay and the neighbouring island of Westray.
